Transom windows sit above existing windows that may not reach all the way to the ceiling. They also might sit above your front door, usually in a half moon shape.
The main purpose of transom windows is to let in more light. They are sometimes functional, but usually not for the simple reason that they are too high on the wall to reach comfortably. They provide a beautiful detail in a room, but many homeowners who have them completely overlook them. They never consider transom stained glass.
