Stained Glass windows can increase the insulation of existing windows.

Stained Glass windows can increase the insulation of existing windows.

If you are a fan of stained glass, you probably only think to appreciate its aesthetic value. It’s beauty. The way it lights up a room, providing a focal point and making the room more elegant. You probably admire the craftsmanship, the tradition, the intricate detail, perhaps even the history of stained glass.

All of that adds to its value in the eyes of our customers too. But they are always surprised when we tell them it has practical value as well. It can add more privacy. Open up a space. Add value to your home. All great benefits. But the one no one really considers, the benefit that surprises our customers, is that with the proper stained glass installation, stained glass panels actually make your windows more energy efficient.

Say what?

You probably already know that each pane of glass in a window adds another layer of insulation. So a double pane window has higher insulating quality than a single pane. By adding stained glass to the interior of an existing window you can turn a single pane window into a double pane, and a double pane into a triple pane. All the more reason to add stained glass, we say.

Now, historically, stained glass installation did not provide any insulation or energy efficiency at all. That’s because the only pane in the window was the stained glass. But with Stained Glass San Antonio’s special installation methods, we actually bond the new decorative panel right to the inside of the existing pane of glass. We use a special bonding tape and caulk carefully around the edges, to ensure no dirt or moisture gets between the stained glass and the original glass.

Voila! A better insulating window.

We have another special stained glass installation technique as well. This is the one we will use for bathroom stained glass, in which we sandwich the stained glass panel in between two pieces of clear glass. In this way, it is protected from the elements on the exterior of the house, and from the bathroom’s moisture and high humidity on the inside. You could say the stained glass is the meat, between the two clear glass pieces of bread.

All of our installers are trained with our modern stained glass installation methods and will determine which one is best for each circumstance.

If you want better insulating windows, you might be thinking replacing the windows. But custom stained glass – designed and hand built exactly to your taste – is a unique and stunning alternative.
