Stained Glass Repair and Restoration
When it comes to stained glass repair, working with an experienced, qualified company makes all the difference. Leaded glass is a delicate work, and it’s important that a window is repaired to really last this time around.
At Scottish Stained Glass, we’ve been not only building new leaded glass pieces, but also repairing and restoring stained glass for more than 20 years. We mix traditional methods with modern technology to ensure that our repairs are effective, and to strengthen the pieces themselves.
Stained Glass Repair Process
We typically begin the process by asking clients to email us in some photos of the stained glass repair or restoration project. Our project managers are able to get a good idea from the photos what the process will need to be for your piece, and can then give you an estimate on the project. After working with so many windows over the years, it usually takes just a simple photo to understand the depth of the work that needs to be done.
However, if you are unable to send us photos for stained glass repair, or if the damage is difficult to see in photos, there is the option of having one of our experts come out and take a look. We do typically charge for this trip, but if you decide to move forward with the repair, this charge will be applied to the cost of the repair itself.
When it comes to repair methods, there are many. If you have breaks in the glass itself, it may mean simply replacing each piece, and re-leading only where needed to reach each broken piece. If the lead is damaged, on the other hand, we may be looking at completely re-leading the window. Today we can use reinforced lead to ensure that it stays strong for considerably longer than the original lead.
We can also restore antique stained glass windows after they have deteriorated over time. This may mean re-leading, or redoing the cement on the lead work, or simply reinforcing a window to keep it strong. Because we have access to more than 600 glass colors, and even more in colorless textures, we have the ability to match nearly any antique glass that you may have.
