Expert Stained Glass Repair Work Makes Tiffany Lamps as Good as New

Few furniture or accessory styles have proved as enduringly popular as the gorgeous, Art Nouveau style Tiffany Lamp, and with good reason. These stained glass masterpieces brighten a room with their stunning glass colors and the almost magical way the light shines through, casting a warm glow around a room.

Their glass shades are heavy, solidly constructed, and built to last, but let’s face it. Glass is fragile and it can, over time or with rough handling, be chipped, cracked, or smashed. Scottish Stained glass has extensive experience with repairing Tiffany Lamps, if one or more of the glass pieces is broken, cracked, or even missing entirely.

Now, technically speaking, the term Tiffany Lamp only refers to lamps made with a glass lampshade designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany or the talented artisans at his design studio. According to a fascinating article on CBS Sunday Morning, “when you see real Tiffany glass for the first time, every discount store or restaurant chain knock-off tiffany lamp becomes an insult.”

But these days, copies and knockoffs do abound, and the term has merely come to mean a lamp with a stained glass shade in a certain style. If it is not a genuine Tiffany, it will usually say “Tiffany Style lamp.”

Look at some gorgeous Tiffany Lamps here.

However, whether genuine or a copy, these lamps are usually elaborate and exquisitely detailed. The individual glass pieces are attached in the pattern with traditional copper foil soldering them together. When Scottish Stained Glass repairs a Tiffany lamp, we search through the wide variety of glass available to us from many different suppliers—both U.S. and abroad—to find the perfect match to the original color. You might be surprised to hear we have access to over 10,000 colors and textures of glass.

But what if, for some reason, we can’t match the original? We have occasionally had glass custom made to match a color or texture for an expensive piece. Otherwise, we might be able to slightly change the design so that the new color fits in and looks like it was always there. We use copper foil as well, expertly recreating the original look.

If you find an antique Tiffany lamp at an estate sale or antique shop, and it is no longer in perfect condition, you can still buy it with confidence, knowing it can be repaired to its original glory. (As long as large chunks of the shade aren’t missing, of course.) If you have a family heirloom in need of repair, rest assured that our expert technicians will give it the best possible care in restoring it.

We have extensive experience in stained glass repair, over twenty five years in fact. What looks like a lost cause to you will most likely be all in a day’s work (or several weeks work) to us.
