Stained glass remodeling & renovation is usually performed when windows have become damaged, lost their color and luster, or are starting to crack due to weakened leading. It is a very time and skill intensive process and therefore should only be carried out by a qualified professional. Over the past twenty five years, San Antonio Stained Glass has completed remodeling and renovation projects of a countless number, all of which have varied in shape and size. We know the best practices and techniques to make stained glass truly shine.
Our Process for Stained Glass Remodeling & Renovation
When you trust us to remodel or restore your stained glass, you’re getting both the skill and experience of individuals who have made stained glass their livelihood. Our artisans employ a high amount of care and precision for all restorations. We use the following method, which we’ve fine tuned over the years, to create remarkable renovations:
Extraction: The stained glass is carefully removed from the building and brought to our workshop.
Cleaning: The panel is soaked in a bath of gentle cleansing solution in order to remove buildup, sediment, and debris. This can last for up to two weeks.
Deconstruction: The original design of the panel is documented using rubbings or photography. Then it is taken apart one piece at a time.
Replacement: All glass that is in good enough condition to be reused is set aside. Broken glass is replaced using glass from our personal collection.
Reconstruction: The panel is put back together. New leading and cementing are used to hold the glass in place. If necessary, steel bars are attached for reinforcement.
Installation: The stained glass is returned to its original site and placement and reinstalled where it belongs. A piece of low-e safety glass is fit over the panel for added protection. The restoration is now complete.
